C. “TIJUANA TOY RUN”
(C)Miss BB

The month was December, the year was 1994 and I was about to experience the first biker run of my life with the Solo Angeles M.C. Tijuana, B.C. Annual Toy Run. I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing five thousand bikers riding side by side and not one of us wearing helmets.

The endless roadway captured my soul and took my breath away. Six years have passed since then and with scores of run pins now covering my leather vest, I find myself once again riding to the Solo Angeles M.C. Tijuana Toy Run. Their first toy run was held seventeen years ago for an orphanage in their hometown of Tijuana, Mexico.

They brought toys, candy and lots of goodies tied down on their Harleys but after arriving they noticed the children had no blankets for their beds, there was no glass in the windows to keep the chilling winds from blowing in and the cupboards were bare of food. One week later, a thousand dollars worth of food and blankets had been collected and the children of the orphanage have never gone hungry or been cold again.

What started off for as a benefit for the orphanage grew into support for the neighborhood and now for an entire city.

Early morning opened with crystal clear, heavenly blue skies promising a beautiful day. Warm winds greeted my friend and I as we arrived at South Coast Harley-Davidson, located in Chula Vista, California, the starting point for this year’s ride. South Coast H-D has been involved with the Tijuana toy run for the last fourteen years. Harley’s were parked all along the street for blocks while their owners packed the Harley store and parking lot. A truck that was being filled with dolls, stuffed animals, toy trucks and toy motorcycles for the children of Tijuana Mexico, was manned by Solo Angeles soldiers wearing red reindeer antlers on their heads.

The registration responsibilities were handled by South Coast, who made the job quick and short, making the usual “hurry up and wait” routine a thing of the past. They did a great job considering there where twenty thousand riders participating in this year’s Solo Angeles M.C. toy run (yeah, it’s gotten a lot bigger in the last six years).

Not long afterwards, we were let given the signal and the ride to the border was on its way. There is no helmet law in Mexico and I always take that damn stupid bucket off my head whenever I am given the golden opportunity to feel the freedom of the wind whipping through my hair. After crossing the border, my friend needed to stop for some gas, giving us the chance to become helmet free. With the help and cooperation of the Mexican Police, we were directed to the proper roadways and our final destination, Revolution Avenue.

The street was blocked off to all automobile transport and the motorcycles rolled into the open street packing it like a can of sardines. Towards the beginning of Revolution Avenue, a huge stage had been constructed manned by the Solo Angeles volunteers and prospects. Stacked sky high was a mountain made of colorful packages, smiling dolls and brand new shiny bicycles waiting to be loved by the children of Tijuana. New York Myke, owner of San Diego Harley-Davidson, welcomed the crowd of MC clubs, independents and onlookers, inviting them to come up and introduce themselves to the people of Tijuana.

After making my way up to the microphone, I made my public announcement that I am “official trash”, Bikertrash.com that is. New York Myke invited me up on stage so that I could get a shot of the crowd of children, which seemed to double in numbers in a matter of moments. So many to care for and so many who rode in to show them they did care.

The people of Tijuana know that if it were not for the love that beats in the heart of the biker nation, these special children might never have received anything at all. Three beautiful brown-eyed angels were lifted upon the stage where New York Myke encouraged them to dance. And dance they did, to the festival music, smiling ear to ear, happy to be the center of attention while their mamas and friends watched on.

Further up the street another stage had been erected where Santa waved to the ever-growing crowd. Live music played forth from this stage filling the air with sweet harmony. The Christmas truck that had been loaded at South Coast Harley-Davidson was now handing out the goodies, as was the first stage where New York Myke was mc’ing. I saw the light of joy shine in the eyes of the children and gratification from their parent’s smiles.

The Solo Angeles M.C. International Toy Run was a huge success; my friend and I enjoyed the day immensely (just like I knew we would). Great food, great weather, great run, great cause.

The Solo Angeles M.C. holds another worthy annual event in April called, “Orfanatorio Chilpancingo” providing new shoes for the children at the orphanage in Tijuana Mexico.

I would like to express my deepest thanks to St. James, Bobbie, Teacher, Hector, Tom Horning of South Coast H-D, Billy Gordon and New York Myke for all the help they bestowed upon me. If anyone would like to contact the Solo Angeles M.C. you can e-mail them at solojunkman@aol.com and/or call Hector Casteneda at (818) 586-6704.

View Event Photos

Live Free Miss BB

Archive notice: This article is preserved from the original BikerTrash.com archive.
