Jen learned to ride on her father's Yamaha 90 as an adolescent and has been hooked ever since. But it is a long hop from a Yamaha 90 to an air-cooled, Twin-Cam 96B engine on a bike that weighs 724 pounds.

As she explains it "I was a little scared at first, but have never run from a challenge. After battling cancer seven years ago, I live my life everyday to the fullest and just try to be the best person I can. I've met some of the greatest people and made life lasting friendships in this new journey in my life."

Just a few short years ago it was relatively unusual for a woman to ride a bike. Even if she did know how to ride, it was uncommon for her to ride her own bike. That has changed rapidly over the last 10 years, as more and more women have joined this popular sport. They aren't just riding wimpy little bikes either; they are on everything from the fastest sport bikes and to the biggest Harleys.

In 1990 women accounted for only 4% of the sales of new Harleys. Last year that rose to 12% when women purchased 32,000 new Harleys. This year the Motor Company expects women to account for over $300 million in sales. And it isn't just motorcycles, women are spending more on motorcycle apparel than ever before with the sale of riding gear to women up over 50% in the last couple of years.

What are the reasons for this surge? The independent spirit for one, a quest for adventure is another. Whether it is for the challenge, for the freedom of the open road or even for transportation the trend towards more women riders and more women motorcycle purchasers will continue.

Women are also becoming more involved in the business side of motorcycling. For example there are several dealerships here in Texas that are owned and run by women.

"Don't ride on motorcycles," Dorothy Waldman preached to her daughters, along with such warnings as, "Don't use drugs." After all, she reasoned, motorcycles, like drugs, can severely harm and even kill a person.

It was not until she was in her fifties that Dorothy first mustered up the courage to get on a motorcycle. That monumental step changed her. That was when her life first began to make sense.

Shortly after her initial ride, she received a contract to write THE BIKERS GUIDE TO TEXAS: 25 Great Motorcycle Rides in the Lone Star State. To write the book, Dorothy had to learn about great bike rides and even how to ride a motorcycle. This was the beginning of The Biker Babe's Guide to Life. Although, she admits, calling herself a "babe" when she is a fifty-something grandmother might seem ludicrous to some, she knows that she is one because she now knows how to live and enjoy life. (www.texasbikerbabe.com)

In Texas, there probably isn't a rider not familiar with motorcycle rider Sue Haley. When her husband died unexpectedly Sue had to jump in and run his insurance agency. Her story is one of someone facing a seemingly daunting task and excelling. Not only did she learn to sell insurance, Sue built her business into one of the largest motorcycle insurance agencies in the country.

So think again the next time some skinny dude on a motorcycle passes you, you might just have the same experience I did. That "skinny dude" took off the helmet and long, flowing blonde hair emerged. The "dude" on the sport bike was actually a very attractive young woman, whose riding skills was as good as any male rider.

By Larry GoreLoneStarBiker — Girls Can Ride TooPages 6-8 by Larry Gore On a recent Houston outing I encountered Jen Cuthbert (cover photo) who for her birthday in July bought a 2007 HD Softtail Deluxe.
