They can also be helpful in side impact crashes and in protecting your legs in the event that you low-side your bike.

Of course you don't want to forget another important reason — they are chrome and they just make a bike look good!

Recently we found a really cool design in an engine guard that is shaped similar to a bar & shield. The design impressed us and we were talking about how fine they would look on a bike when the storeowner came over to explain them to us.

Now, my first thought was "l have seen engine guards before, they really don't need much explanation."

These, we learned, were the Phantom Highway Bar by JBN Custom. The owner reached down with his foot and tapped a small button on top of the guard. Voila! Out from the side popped a highway peg. The bars had been cleverly designed so that highways pegs telescope into the horizontal portion of the bar and remain hidden until needed. These are manufactured and designed by JBN Custom of Katy, Texas.

Press the buttons and you have instant highways pegs. When you no longer need them simply push them inward with the side of your foot and they become hidden again.

Closer inspection revealed that the bars seem to be very well made, the pop out foot pegs worked smoothly and properly every time we tested them. The fit and finish of the chrome showed good workmanship.

The classic design adds it chrome accent to dress up even the most customized bike.

The suggested retail price is $295.00

If your local dealer doesn't carry the JBN Custom Phantom Highway Bar you can contact them directly at:

JBN Custom 20770 Westheimer Parkway Suite 506 Katy, TX 77450 www.JBNCustom.com

View the original article scans (PDF)

Originally published in Motorcycles On The Road Again, July 2007.
