The recommended route is almost 500 miles of backroads riding, countryside and small towns. If you want to do a shorter trip simply pick a portion of the suggested route and do the rest on a later ride. Although we show Katy, Texas as the start point you can "pick up the trail" anywhere along the route.

Although coverage of the Texas Independence Trail could not be complete without the Alamo or the San Jacinto Battleground we are not addressing those in this issue.

You zip along the concrete slab between Houston and San Antonio or Austin at 80 mph and signs flash by with unfamiliar names on them — La Grange, Luling, and Lockhart…more traffic, more 18-wheelers blowing by and more road signs; Cat Spring, Eagle Lake, Nada…Nada?

Do you ever wonder about them? Who lives there? What is there? Is it worth a visit?

We encourage you to "tank-up and take-off". Maybe not a week on the road or even a long weekend but perhaps just a good day's ride.

Pick a town or two and make a day of it. Do you know where to find some really great BBQ? We will tell you.

What about a small town just chock-full of antique shops? Those are here too.

History buff? Check out Washington-On-The-Brazos, or Gonzales for Texas history.

Train buff? Don't miss the Railroad displays in Moulton and Flatonia.

Who can resist a tour through the "Little Creamery in Brenham" home of Blue Bell Ice Cream? Take a tour and enjoy a nice dish of homemade vanilla before you leave.

If this sounds like a slower, simpler time, it is. In many of these places you will feel as if you are 50-miles and 50-years from the Big City.

Okay, you've thought about it long enough. Grab the guide, make a reservation at one of the Bed & Breakfast places and then "Tank Up and Take Off!"

Larry Gore
Editor

By Larry GoreLoneStarBiker — Texas Independence TrailPage 5 In this issue we focus on the area that falls roughly within a triangle made up of San Antonio, Austin and Houston — the general area covered by The Texas Independence Trail.
